Broken Vessell

Gideon’s men quietly picked their way in the darkness around the Midianites  camp. At the signal, they broke their clay vessels allowing the flaming torches to be seen. The Midianites felt outnumbered and beaten by the seeming great army that had come upon them. It’s amazing what God can do with people that will hide the lamp in their vessels and be willing to break them at Gods signal.

Jdg 7:19  So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outpost of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just as they had posted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers that were in their hands.

The lamp is the word of God.  Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.   Psalm 119:105.   God’s word is our lamp to win our war but the lamp has to be hidden inside the vessel – inside our heart and life.   David said that he hid Gods Word in his heart that he might not sin against God. Psa 119:11.  If there is no Word stored in our heart there will be no victory in the field.  Our weapons are not carnal which just means you can’t beat the devil by mind or muscle power. You can be 150 kg and still be putty in the devils hand. You need to hold the word of God in our heart – it is the sword that works not garlic. How many of us still memorize scripture?   If there is no Word hidden in our hearts there is no sword in our lips.  Most of us wish for the victory of David but don’t have the heart of David. Look at his love for the Word of God.

Blessed are You, O LORD! Teach me Your statutes.

I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, As much as in all riches.

I will meditate on Your precepts, And contemplate Your ways.

I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word. Psa 119:12- 16

The Bible has to be more to us than an App on our phone next to Pokemon and Facebook.   But although we are to put Gods Word inside our heart it’s never to remain inside the vessel or stay hidden.   Jesus said no one lights a lamp to hide it under something but they make sure it can shine out.  Our enemy is defeated when Gods word shines forth when the enemy confronts us or in our times of challenge.  Paul often had troubles with people he met and situations he ran into were threatening and demanding but the treasure inside him shone forth. God shone out of darkness; even out of an earthen vessel to reveal His power (2Co 4:6-7). Paul was saying that he had light and it still shone even when the vessel is “broken.”   Our meditation will determine whether there’s some light inside the pitcher but what determines your breakthrough is whether that light shines out of your life when we’re broken.

Paul and Silas were arrested on their missionary journey, beaten and locked up but at midnight they sang praises to God and the prisoners heard.  Acts 16. The devil made a mistake when he put Paul and Silas in the same cell.  The Bible says that Paul’s voice was contemptible but at midnight when Silas joined in the harmony of faith sounded so good God turned up and every prisoner’s bands were loosed – not just the two Apostles. When the vessels were broken they still shone forth light and the enemy was scattered, just like with Gideon.

Friend, if you are hiding Gods word in your heart and will declare Gods goodness and rule in your circumstances, God can scatter the enemy and bring a victory.  We may not be put in a prison, but every day we have opportunities to break our vessel and let the light shine.  Someone is sick at work, or a stranger on the train wants to talk.  If you will take a risk and step up to pray or witness break your “self-contained vessel” and let the light shine forth bring a breakthrough to you and them.  And that friend is a good day.
